Allahabad University

Allahabad University has always occupied an esteemed place among the universities of India for over a century now. Established on 23rd September 1887, it is the fourth oldest university of India after Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras University. The credit for conceiving a large Central College at Allahabad, eventually to develop into a University, is due to Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of United Provinces. As a result of his initiative the foundation stone of the Muir Central College (named after him) was laid on Dec. 9 1873 by His Excellency Lord Northbrook..

Statistics Department

The Statistics unit came into existence in 1968 as a part of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The unit really became functional with the appointment of three regular teachers of Statistics in 1974 under the esteemed leadership of an outstanding statistician and the first researcher in the field of Bayesian Reliability Analysis in the world, Professor Samir K. Bhattacharya. Professor Bhattacharya was the first Professor of Statistics, who later became the Head of combined Department of Mathematics and Statistics during the period 1989-1995. On August 21, 2000, the statistics department was separated from mathematics with Professor G. S. Pandey was the first Head of Department of Statistics and Professor Anoop Chaturvedi and Professor S. Lalitha as other faculty members. Prof Anoop Chaturvedi was the Head of the Department from February 2008 to October 2013. Professor S. Lalitha became the Head of the Department in October 2013. Two more faculty – Dr. Pramendra Singh Pundir and Dr. Anup Kumar have joined the department since July 2013. The faculty members are pursuing research in the areas of reliability theory, econometrics, Bayesian statistics, time series, order statistics, quality control, sampling survey, sequential analysis, survival analysis, mathematical demography and stochastic modeling. They are working in collaboration with the members of several Indian and foreign universities and research institutes. Allahabad University Statistics Alumni Association

A group of alumni from the Department of Statistics, University of Allahabad, Prayagraj. The department which started in 1968, has shaped the lives of a lot of students, who came together to form this group to promote the overall wellbeing of this department and to create a support system for new graduates. .

First Statistics alumni, online meet was held Online on June 14, 2020 at Google Meet. This was attended by approximately 70 participants. These participants included current and retired faculty members, previous students all the way from the 1970 from the Department of Statistics. Many participants were well placed in the Central Government Departments of Government of India, State Government departments, Central Universities. Participants from abroad mostly working in foreign Universities, research departments like National Institute for Health, USA, and multinational companies like Microsoft and HSBC also participated in this event. Few AU statistics alumni are also distinguished alumni of Indian Statistical Institute and Indian Institute of Technology..
